What's Wrong with the Presbyterian Church USA?

Ever since I have become a Presbyterian, I have sensed that something is not right with this denomination.

I became a Presbyterian a number of years ago while I was married. Why I moved from being a Methodist to a Presbyterian is a different blog for a different time. I can say that the reason I changed was not because I disliked the United Methodist Church or it's doctrine.

I think the best way for me to explore this topic is to make a list of my thoughts, feelings, perceptions and observations about the Presbyterian Church USA.

1. Tethers to Joy. I sometimes feel a sense of unrestrained joy about the Power and Love of Jesus Christ. I sometimes have lots of energy and would like to shout, "Let's take the love of Christ, go out and love folks as they are and where they are and change the world!" It is when I get to this point, I often hearing about the red tape of session approval and some talk about all the reasons why it isn't that easy. It is almost like I have to apply for license, fill out tons of paperwork, form a committee to appoint another committee to do a feasibility study on the whole idea.

There are a gang of "buts..." lurking in the shadows of my exuberant "Yes!"

2. Overt and covert disapproval of Contemporary Christian Music. I have sat in a number of meetings over the years about why contemporary Christian music and (gasp) modern praise music is unacceptable. I will continue later on this.

Defining yourself by what you are not

I have been thinking of atheists lately. I run across a lot of atheists videos on YouTube. You've probably seen some of them. Many of of the videos are either about a particular person's breaking away from Christianity or some other faith. Many other videos are made with the intent of mocking the Bible or aspects of it. A few videos ( I wish there were more) are made with more of an atheist outlook or approach to life with no name calling, or other harshness against Christians or other beliefs.

As a Christian who has gone through a number of seasons in my own faith I have had my own doubts, questions and struggles. I think it is important that one respect others life journeys when it comes to faith or lack of it.

I have engaged in many debates and I will not back away from one that I am interested in participating in. For me, right now, I would rather engage in a dialogue or honest conversation about differences and things we, as humans, may have in common. I will respect a person's lack of belief but in return, I ask that the glib criticisms, attitudes of superiority, and the atheist
ad homonym smack-downs be put aside.

It occurred to me there most of the atheists I have run across on YouTube videos and comments, are quick to deny that atheism is some kind of non-God faith or humanistic belief system. Atheists often define themselves by what they are not and nothing else.

The burden of proof is almost always laid at the feet of the religious person. The atheist's posture is one of offense and rarely defensive in nature.

If got me thinking that one of my prerequisites for engaging in an honest discussion or dialogue with an atheist would be that the atheist must offer up some positive identity of what who they are and what life philosophy to which that person ascribes. I don't mind that atheism is part of the conversation but there must be something more.

Imagine writing a personal resume where a person only refers to him/herself as what they are not.

* Not a high school dropout.
*I did not drop out of college.

Work History
*Did not work at any fast food restaurants.
*2008 - 2010 Was not unemployed or merely employed part time.
Did not get fired. Did not do IT work.
Reason for leaving: I did not get fired.

I think that in order for a meaningful dialogue or even a debate to occur, both parties must include positive position rather than assuming a negative or hidden identity.

Lenten Reflections

Lent is actually one of my favorite times of the year. Starting with Ash Wednesday, I stood in line and waited for my turn to be marked with a cross of ashes on my forehead. Hearing the words (paraphrased), "From dust you were created, and to dust you will return.

Participants were then invited to speak the words, "I repent and I believe in the Gospel." I cannot remember when I actually said the words, "I repent" in public. I am reflecting now on what that means to me and what repentance will call for in my life. I think of repentance as purposefully turning in a new direction.

400 Superbowl fans denied seats near the last minute-seats not ready

Have you ever planned something very special, plan it to the hilt and pay big money for the event and then dreamed of how much fun it will be? Then on this special day, whether it be a big international trip, a long anticipated wedding, or the Super Bowl, things fall apart.

This is what just happened to several hundreds of fans at this year's Superbowl.

Are they angry? Many are yes, Hurt? I'm sure. Disappointed? That is an understatement.

Yet, unfortunately, stuff like this happens all the time. Reality check: We live in a broken and sinful word.

People make mistakes and people mess up. Sometimes people are put in the hot seat and have to make unpopular decisions.

The lesson for me is I am reminded that this is only and imperfect world, this is not all their is and to count my blessings. I remember reading is scripture that Jesus warned his Disciples that they would have trouble in this world, but He has overcome the world. We as followers of Jesus have been given an amazing gift called Grace and everything on earth that is special, pales to that gift. Life does go on.

Furthermore, what a wonderful thing it would be if the Holy Spirit let the church into the world to meet people as Chirst did, where they are. I'm going to come out and say it--

Acts 16:1-5

I am tired of hearing people comment that the church needs to attract more people!

A variation on this statement is: "Our church needs more young people in it."

My frustration is NOT that I dislike my church or the church in general or that I don't think God's church should encompass more people. None of the above. I LOVE Christ's Church.

I see the empty pews just like everyone else does. Yet I wonder if the pews themselves aren't part of the problem.

Some questions to consider-

We say we want more people to come to our church, but why?

Are we, as a church, willing to accept new ideas and ways of doing things that new people bring? Are we willing to accept people that may not look like traditional Christians?

Perhaps there is an unsaid qualifier after the statement, If only we could get more people to come/join OUR church? (and follow our rules, culture, traditions, and leadership while not introducing any significant element of change) In other words what is left out is as long as we're in charge, whoever "we" is, we want more people to come here.

Would congregations who have not gained visitors or members do any better or worse by saying, We don't want new members of visitors to come here instead saying the converse statement? Would there be any difference in the numbers?

There are certain things in life that are bi product desirables such as earning money or being famous. In order to achieve these oftentimes bi product benefits, one cannot focus on the bi products, but rather be passionate or excelling at something else that produces the wanted bi-products.

For example, In order to earn money, one needs to focus ones energy in providing product or service that is valued by someone else. Only when someone chooses to buy this product or service will the seller earn money. No one really cares to hear someone say, "Man, I really want to make money" except of course for folks who sell get rich quick schemes on late night infomercials.

Sales trainer Tom Hopkins answers a customers question of "How much commission do you make?" with "Yes, I receive compensation for the services I provide,but the benefits you receive will far exceed this compensation."

Perhaps increasing church membership is like that too. In order for a church to get people to come to church one has to focus not on the numbers but on prayer and God's Word, heartfelt and meaningful service to people outside the doors of the church, and living life daily with Christian humility, joy,enthusiasm and authenticity among people outside the walls of the church.

But ultimately, isn't it God's business that His church grows?

Glimpsing God through the Coach Prism

While I viewed this video clip, I wondered if God is like a coach. I find it easy to slip into the false mode of thinking that God is really a pushover of sorts: quick to forgive and full of mercy with little or no high expectations for us. The first part is true, he is quick to forgive and full of mercy yes, but a pushover, no! Does the coach in the video act like a pushover? I have to remind myself that God has a purpose, a calling, and a mission for each one of us. If we are content to recline and think that the world is meant to serve our every fancy and whim, we are mistaken.

Holding this type of attitude is a disservice to the Christian martyrs of history who stood their ground, did hard stuff, and were murdered for the Cause of Christ.
Forgive me, Lord.

Listening for the Answer

Was thinking a lot today while at church. In Sunday school, we discussed the things we just don't know or things God has not revealed to us or has yet to reveal to us.

We live in a time where people want quick answers to everything. Finding an answer can be as easy as "Googling" a key word or question. In a society brimming with media, many folks are not willing to wait on answers. As far as answers and convenience store items go, we want both and we want them immediately.

So how do we as Christians in these times respond when we repeated ask a question, and God seems to respond in this way.

Me: "God, I have a question about Your Will for my life and I need to know the answer."

God: "I can help you with that. I will reveal the answer to you. One thing though, it will take your entire life to hear the answer to your question."

An Enemy to No Man

I am at home reflecting about this morning's sermon from our pastor. This morning's message was based on 1 Timothy 2:1-7

1 Timothy 2:1-7 (New International Version)

Instructions on Worship 1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

During his sermon, our pastor made a statement that set me back on my heels. It was:

"A Christian is the enemy of no man."

For those who know me and read my blog postings, I am passionate about my political and spiritual views at times. I cherish freedom of speech and the ability to criticize the government as one of the cornerstones the United States was founded upon.

Yet, I am called as a follower of Jesus to pray for those in authority and in leadership and strive to live "peaceful and quiet lives" with our neighbors whether we like them or not.

I makes sense that a Christian be the enemy of no man, as God works through our lives for others to deliver salvation's message and the message of grace for others.

1 Timothy 2:3-4 reads: This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of truth.

If Christians were to be an enemy of someone, then an avenue to God is cut off from that person. In the song, If We are the Body by Casting Crowns, is says, "Jesus paid much to high a price, for us to pick and choose who should come and we are the body of Christ."

Perhaps, Christians are citizens of a heavenly kingdom first and before our earthly citizenship to the United States. However, I think the two lands are not mutually exclusive or collectively exhaustive or in other words, there could be an overlap. Is there?

In the Gospels, Jesus criticized the Jewish leadership of his time on Earth. Jesus was never a person who could be described as "pleasingly indifferent."

I write on this not because I have the answers, but its because I don't and am struggling.

Swords and Scripture

There are many good people who have divergent views over the personal owning of and use of weapons for defensive purposes. There are some that choose not to own a gun, and that is fine. I have often struggled with certain interpretations of scripture. Some argue since Jesus was a man of peace, Christians who strive to be like Jesus should therefore never own or use a weapon for any reason, including defensive purposes.

Consider the following scriptures: Luke: 22: 35-37 35

Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors' and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." 38The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied.

Matthew 10:33-35 (New International Version)

33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. 34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn " 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her motherinlaw—

The world sword is used a total of 406 times in the Old and New Testament books.

I often hear the following scripture quoted:

Matthew 26:52 (New International Version)
52"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

If it is improper for a disciple of Jesus to own a sword, why would Jesus instruct his closest followers to purchase swords? Granted it seems clear that Jesus' arrest in Gethsemane, it was not the right time to use the sword, but perhaps Jesus' own instructions on purchasing swords was for some other time.

In own own time, is it not right for a gun owner to use a gun against a perpetrator who is aggressively assaulting one's own spouse, child, or someone else in danger? Would it not be love to use the sword to save those in imminent peril?

I think there is a difference in "living by the sword" as some versions of Matthew 26:52 might say, and using the sword as a defensive tool at the proper time.

I continue to struggle with this scripture and other teachings of Jesus. Yet, I believe that Jesus words in scripture and the words and ideas we use as people are, by far, the most effective weapons against evil and tyranny.

Nadya Suleman: Modern Day Woman at the Well?
John 4: 1-14 NIV

9The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

I want to start by making a provocative but true statement:

Jesus Loves Nadya Suleman!

Many people who are either following the Nadya Suleman story or being subjected to it at grocery store check-outs or in the media have taken up a new hobby of despising Nadya Suleman also know as the Octomom.

What would it be like to live in the constant attention of the media and be likewise scorned by many who do not even know her personally. Suleman is not the only one who was hated and despised by the world-So was Jesus.

One question is: Why would Nadya Suleman intentionally act to bring more children to her world when she does not have the resources to care for them? No one but Suleman can answer that and she may not be able to fully answer it.

Why have I (and other humans too) do/done stupid, irresponsible careless things in my/our past(s)? I would call it the human condition. If I were to take a guess, I would suspect that Suleman is trying to fill a spiritual need in her life? Perhaps she craves love and relationship that children offer. Or perhaps she is trying to slake a thirst for God's love or Living water and she is drawing from different wells until she finds it.

At any rate, while it would be easy for me to throw proverbial stones at Suleman because of her actions. (When I first heard about the story, I was critical of the seemingly irresponsible predicament she has brought on herself. My attitude is changing on this and a new perspective is setting in for me.)

Yet. I must pause because I might just be throwing stones at myself for I, in my own broken humanity, am Nadya Suleman. I like Suleman, struggle and thirst for God's love to fill my deepest needs. I am the beggar. The only difference between me and Suleman is I am not in the media spotlight or the topic of water cooler conversations.

The Suleman story offers a real opportunity for followers of Jesus to exhibit radical extravagant love for her and for other single parents who are in trouble or cannot provide for their families. I think if the church mobilized and wrapped such as these in the arms of love, it would make any government handout or program, such as WIC or welfare, appear as mere crumbs in comparison.

I got a postcard today from an former coworker who is attending a college in Florida.

The postcard had a cute little picture of a sleeping puppy with the words:

Thoughts on "Saved"

A recent post by my friend Jonathan got me thinking about what "Saved" really means.

Who is? Who isn't? Is it a one time thing or is it a continual process? If one is "Saved" can one lose or be dropped from the saved status? What role do I have in it, if any?

In my reflections on the word and my own theological understanding lead me to the thinking about a person who is drowning in a large deep body of water. I would argue without God, we are all drowning spiritually in this world.

If a person is drowning in the sea and is spotted by a very skilled rescuer (in a boat perhaps), how much of the drowning persons rescue would depend the drowning person? Would any rescuer during the process of the rescue abort the rescue and abandon the drowning man to the murky depths of the ocean?

Would God, who sacrificed his only Son on our behalf, act capriciously with His Saving mercy, withdrawing it. Would we as followers of Christ, be drawn to follow on a road where we would stumble and fall, only to be abandoned by our Savior? I think not.

I stumbled up the Michael McCarty's blog Around the Scuttlebutt through Quotidian Grace.

McCarty has a wonderful fictional parody series going called "Advertures of Greying Presbyterian Church." His episodes about Greying Presbyterian paint a picture of what's happening at too many churches. I like his use of humor to get a point across and perhaps open some eyes and hearts about the needs for God's people young and old for positive Godly change.

My Goals for 2009

Traditionally, New Years day is a time for many to make New Year's resolutions only to abandon them later. I decided I would not make any resolutions but rather set some solid goals for myself and hold myself accountable to them by publishing them on my blog for the world to see.

I invite friends and anyone comment during the year and ask how I am doing on these goals. Ultimately, I want to grow spiritually and learn to love and trust God better. Here are some goals I want to achieve, with God's help.

1. Read from the books of Romans and John everyday for six months. At the end of six months, I will probably pick two other books from the Bible. This is done as an effort to immerse myself in two wonderful Books which reveal God's word. During this time, I would also like to learn as much about these two books as I can.

2. Start my day in the morning with prayer, devotion, and music incorporating reading from the One Year Bible. My goal is 30 minutes each day.

3. Sign up to become a Prison Ministry Pen Pal. I have been contemplating this for over a year. I am considering using a pen name as there are hazards with forming a relationship with a convicted criminal. Yet we are called to remember those in prison.

4. Finish Laura's telescope by June 1st, 2009.

5. Loose 20lbs by the end of 2009 with exercise and diet modifications. This is a goal in progress. I used to be a runner. I might try to accomplish this goal by a daily regimen of walking and/or running. There is a 26 mile run in San Antonio in November every year. I might train with a goal of running in that. I will have to get started soon. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Decloaked comments- I have been reflecting on this quote for a few days, perhaps a week. There is a lot of truth in what Ginny Owen's mom told her. It's amazing how fast an open mistake, problem or crisis can isolate a person from people. The saying goes, misery loves company but this well-worn saying doesn't go far enough. It is also true that company hates misery.

It is good to remember that just as we should praise Jesus in the good and the bad, Jesus will stay with each one of us in the good and the bad. What a true friend He is!

When I feel like I am discriminated against or am treated rudely or unfairly, I try to remember that Jesus came for our good, yet he was beaten and crucified. Why should I get any better treatment?

On a positive note, In 2009, a good way to live would be to identify those persons that are hurting and perhaps have made mistakes to not abandon them.

Christmas: A Holy Invasion

A few days before Christmas, we watched the movie, "The Nativity Story." I thought the movie did a good job at portraying the difficulties and harshness of life in Nazareth and the Holy Land at the time of the birth of Jesus. The movie also portrayed King Herod as a ruler paranoid of possible threats to his power which he wielded with cruelly and brutally. Yet, the hope that came with the birth of Jesus shined brightly in this dark and troubled time.

Chuck Colson's Breakpoint column, Incarnation, reminded me of this movie. In it he talks of the birth of Christ being as a Holy invasion into a world occupied by Satan. Like the World War II Allied D-Day invasion which occurred on the beaches of Normandy, the first Christmas marked an invasion of the Holy onto into a sin sick and troubled world.

Coming to Grips with My Own Heart regarding the Poor.

In a conversation today, the person I was talking to said that he respected the poor. I responded in an "Of Course" fashion, but after leaving, started thinking and asking myself, "Do I really respect the poor?"

Years ago during while I was in college taking education classes, I was exposed to a book titled,

A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby Payne. It is an enlightening book. One of the things I took from the book is that generational poverty is not about lacking money, it is about peoples attitudes towards money and life. That made sense to me. Put simply, many that fit in the lower socioeconomic group live inthe present and rather than saving or investing in the future. In essence, many poor people live life getting by from one moment to the next and see little hope that the future can be better than the now.

I felt pretty satisfied with that understanding. But I am asking the question again. Do I respect the poor? Christmas is a good time to be reflecting on this as Christ came to earth to preach good news to the poor, the outcasts and those that existed on the outskirts of society.

I guess another relevant question would be, "Do I love the Poor as Jesus does?" That's tough.

What About Now?

A few days ago while at the grocery store, I heard a bit of the Chris Daughtry song. "What About Now?" A the time I didn't even catch the title. Today I heard the song playing from a CD Player inside a small clothing store in town. I got the title and artist.

Just a few moments ago, I "Youtubed" and what I saw drew my complete and undivided attention.

Not a condemnation, but a challenge and a reminder. A reminder the hour is desperate and individuals ( you and I) need to prayerfully consider how we can put our hands to work in service to make some one's day a little brighter. We are also reminded of the the stakes are damn high and we are issued a challenge to do something tangible in love for our neighbor and for the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ who took my place and yours on that cross so we might live.

Something Greater in Control

While I was in the process of taking care our dogs and filling the bird feeder and birdbath (Normal morning chores prior to getting ready for work), something in the sky gave caused me to pause and reflect on the magnificence of God's creation and plan.

To the south, I saw geese flying high in the sky in their ordered "V" or check mark formation while an occasional distant honk could be heard. At the end of a turbulent election week, I needed a reminder that something bigger or Someone bigger is in control and that God's undercurrents directs the world and creation.

No goose I saw in the sky flew alone. They were all in place. They all "knew" it was time to fly.
They followed the flow of nature and time apart from the measure of the clock. It was the flock's moment to fly and they did. Animals in tune to the natural order and flow of creation.

It served a good reminder that the American political process in the grand order to things is very small indeed and that our loving God is not in any risk.

Less than Impressed with Mission Presbytery Meeting

I went to my first Presbytery meeting in San Antonio this weekend which was held at FPC San Antonio. The Sanctuary was huge and had some of the most beautiful stained glass windows I have ever seen.

Yet, as a first time visitor, I was saddened by much but not all of what I heard.

I watched as Commissioners talked about the PCUSA supporting a single payer health care system, code speak for nationalized health care. I heard person perhaps a commissioner talk (too happily I might add) about the recent GA overture about redefining the definition of marriage.

I love the local Presbyterian churches I have been blessed to be apart of but my recent visit has reaffirmed the error I perceive in the larger national church.
I fear too many within our church are confusing leftist socialism and stat ism with
with the mission of the church.

I heard a message of we are church following the lead of culture and ending it with smiles and hugs.

I do not profess to have cornered the market on God's will--not by a long shot, yet something (big) is not right.

On a positive note: I do applaud the church is San Antonio that was able to form including different cultures and ethnicities.

If you read this and are a Presbyterian, I invite any and all thoughts and ideas as comments.

Several years ago while teaching a youth Sunday School class, I brought several portraits of Jesus, each created emphasizing one characteristic over another, with none offering a picture (In my opinion) that was remotely real or authentic to the complete person of Jesus. Some illustrations were overtly political such as the one with Jesus wrapped in the American flag.

Whether it be the Democrats, Republicans, or some other political group, drafting Jesus into national politics adulterates the Jesus written of in the Holy Bible.

A View from the Back: Holy Ritual

Today at Church I was serving in a different role that I do normally on Sundays.

On most Sundays, I sing in the choir where I typically sit in with the choir at the front of the church behind the communion table. Today, I sat in the very back of the church near the entrance to the sanctuary.

It was there I really got to see things differently and in a way I haven't seen before.

What stood out for me was the holiness of Ritual; from the Acolytes bringing the light into the sanctuary, confession, the recitation of the Nicine creed, and the ritual of Holy Communion where the bread and the wine (grape juice) are distributed to the people.

I glimpsed the need for the holy ritual of worship in my lives and the lives of others. I have learned that young children and animals depend on ritual to provide a sound structure for living and to foster an atmosphere of peace. Could this be true for Christians and people of all ages?

I also witnessed the reverence and meaning that Holy Communion has for individuals. Facial countenances are unique but altogether different. It is said by the pastor during Holy Communion: Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

I think it is fair to say that God touches and fellowships with each of us during the ritual of worship and at times, we catch glimpses of Christ's Holiness and the workings of the Holy Spirit.

If you haven't been to church lately, you are missing out on a lot of life and love.

More Thoughts on the Aging Church Phenomenon

Street Prophets has an interesting Aug 11th post on Theories on the Decline of Mainline Denominations .

One of the most interesting thoughts I found was not in found in the post, but rather in a comment posted by Ashbury Park.

Ashbury Park writes: "A pastor has to have some extraordinary talents & youthful ideas to bring a church back from the brink, but a pastor's efforts will almost always be resisted by an aging & complacent congregation that has become accustomed, at home & in church, to not having a lot of noisy children running around underfoot. Their church is an extension of their retirement, a bit sad, usually dull, dusty, nostalgic. For excitement, they can always hop on a bus to Atlantic City."

The "extension of their retirement" phrase struck a chord of truth for me.

I have seen decisions made that serve "the status-quo", paths that promise minimal risk, or actions that promote the most conservative position possible for congregations time and time again.

I think it would be healthy and revealing for individual congregations to be honest with themselves and really determine if the members want younger members to join the congregation or if it is a hopeful ideal with little precious real intent behind it.

In a book I read ( I can't remember the title) it stated very strongly we do what we "WILL". Despite all the rhetoric and talk, what we truly "Will" happens, the rest, like the "some days" that so many talk about, never seem to happen.

Streamlining the Mainline Churches

My Five Critical Components for (40 and Under) Friendly Churches (and wanna be Churches.)

What's your 5?

It is hardly news that many of the mainline Christian denominations have been steadily greying rather than growing. While I have recently left the 40 and under crowd (41), it is distressing to see once vibrant congregations who once tackled church building and expansion projects, now host a handful at worship services.

While I think the maxim, The situation didn't happen in a short period of time, so the solution will probably a while as well holds true in this situation. However, I wanted to come up with five critical things any congregation must do to be friendly to Christians under 40.

1. Pray individually and as a church and ask for God's blessings and guidance. as Owen Meany is quoted in the Irving Book, A Prayer for Owen Meany "Prayer works; it really does."

2. Have and maintain a website. If a church doesn't have a website, that church can be invisible to young adults and many others. Furthermore, many communities have events that a church can have a booth or participate in some way: Participate in them!

3. Serve the community in church and out. There are plenty of local mission opportunities in any community. Helping others joyfully means being seen and making connections. Serving in church means offering discussions about relevant faith issues and key problems. It also means the basics such as offering a good nursery for those with children and keeping the church grounds trimmed, attractive and inviting.

4. Be brave and open to new ideas, new music, and new worship that can strengthen and deepen genuine Christian faith. At the same time, identify dead traditions and rituals that may have lived their time. It takes congregational discernment to separate the things that nurture church members and those things that just members in their confort zones. Furthermore, promote a permission giving church. As I remember hearing, the fastest way to kill a new idea in a church committee, is to respond to a new idea with the words, "Well, if we approve that, it would set a precedent."

5. Encourage genuine enthusiasm! Follows of Jesus have hope in their hearts. Identify strong areas where your church shines brightly. Then do more of it and talk up the enthusiasm, joy and hope!

In it's essence, the job of following Christ should actually be deemed worthy to be demonstrated on the popular reality show, Dirty Jobs. Jesus footsteps, if we are able to follow them, would take us into mud pits, hell-holes, and forsaken places. They will also put us directly in front of smelly undesirable and unpopular folks of all shapes and sizes.

Square One

"The best and only way you can save the world is to follow Jesus and commit your heart, mind and life to Him."

The above sentence is a revelation that I had this week. It seems like it is easy to pour oneself into good causes in an effort to make a difference. Currently there is a big eco push that has taken hold with a large number of folks and a lot of folks have jumped on the "green" band wagon.

There also many other world problems such as higher energy costs, inflation, genocide and atrocities in Darfur, sex slavery, drug addiction, hunger, crime, culture wars, war in general, animal abuse, homelessness, infanticide, censorship, political correctness,opression, religious persecution, hate in general, etc, etc.

This Friday afternoon after 5:00 I find myself once again overwhelmed, saddened and depressed by the headlines, and yet I am also overwhelmed by countless causes that I can give money, volunteer time, and change my life to try to make a difference in something. Yet I am one person. It's frustrating.

A reality of sort hits me Friday after 5pm after the Sunday edition is done, and I sit at my desk. What did I really accomplish? Where is my life going?

I think God is trying to get me back to square one.

Even Jesus said to his disciples that in this world they would have problems. But then he told them (and us) that He has overcome the world.

I also recall Jesus saying something about laying my burdens down. Could he mean a burden like trying to make a difference on my own, or being burdened down by the daily news?

I am a mess. I need to be lead back to square one.

Living on the Margins
or Dirty Faith

I like this video because it is an example of young adults living their beliefs and not selling out. I have to admit I was not really comfortable watching the video, it "dumpster diving for food" is beyond my confort zone. It amazes me the amount of edible food that gets tossed daily by grocery stores in America.

We are indeed a land of plenty. Is this what Jesus meant when he said, If you lose your life, you will find it?

I have to admit, I like seeing hungry people get fed.

The Four Agreements

I heard this concept mentioned today by a caller on the Joe Paggs show on WOAI 590 AM. The topic centered around persons that made a difference in your life.

One caller said as he was doing court ordered community service work, he ran into a professional baseball player who told him about The Four Agreements concept. In short the four agreements are:

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don't take anything personally.

3. Don't make assumptions.

4 Always do you best.

Like the Rotary 4-Way test, these principles are valuable ideals to strive for rather than tasks easily achieved. While I have not read the book by the same name, it was just put on my wish list as a book I would like to read.

I have to take issue with Mr. Wagner's assessment of scripture. I have not as yet had the opportunity to read "Life of the Beloved": Spiritual Living in a Secular World", so my criticism will be primarily about Mr. Wagner's views and implications on God's Love, and Salvation.

In paragraph 2, Wagner writes, "The Bible teaches us that only Christians are chosen of God (1 Peter 1: 1-2)" Do you mean to imply by that statement that God is a covenant breaker?

Faith, where does faith come from? We also know from scripture that faith that God looks for does not come from "works"

17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
So it is through hearing the word of Christ that we hear the message and thus are lead to having faith.

Thus what Wagner says: "If you are a nonbeliever, God offers you his gospel message but until you accept it, you are utterly separated from Him-period, end of discussion." is dangerously close to stating that man alone apart from God has the power (or the works) to choose God's salvation.

Even Jesus on the cross said according to Luke 23:34 (New International Version)

34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[a] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Furthermore, Wagner's statements of God's Love and Salvation sound too neat, too facile and and way too formulaic.

As a pastor once said, "The only view of sin that matters is the view from the Cross"

In conclusion, the one of the most disturbing things that Wagner writes is " you are utterly separated from Him-period, end of discussion."

End of discussion? The discussion does not end. Unless each of us keeps the conversation going, earnestly wrestling with our faith with God and fellow Christians, how can our faith be perfected?

The sinners prayer for grace and salvation is a daily prayer!

God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer.

Going Home

It has been one week since Laura returned home to Germany after staying with us for an entire school year.
It was a real blessing to have her here.

In a conversation with my dad, I referred to the whole experience as "life-changing." While we were sad to see her go back home, my wife and I were happy knowing she was returning to her parents, friends and family who missed her greatly during the past 10 months.

Germany in no longer just a country on a map, it is now a place where someone we know and love lives.
I strongly feel that if everyone had a friend in another country, the world would be a more sane, civil, and loving place.

I watched a brave 16 year old arrive at the airport, then overcome obstacles, challenges and make more than a few friends along the way. I seriously doubt that I would have been able to do what she did when I was her age.

I look forward to seeing Laura again and meeting her family. Her stay with us here enriched our lives and others within our community.

What I War Against

I am at war against those forces that try to police thoughts (read polical correctness) and speach of others, who regularly shut down honest civil debate and discussion with unfounded accusations of racism and other cowardly assaults.

I am against grand scale efforts to repeat a lie over and over again until people believe the lie is the truth.

I am against the notion it is better to tolerate and get along with at the cost of selling my own beliefs/identity out.

What role do I play? Everyday I get up and honestly try be the person God would have me be, I win a little bit each day.

Each day I am brave enough disagree even at the cost of making others mad, I win.

Each day I can hold the Love of God in my heart and share it with others, even in a small way, I win.

I win each and every time I can respond to the world's command of "Yes you will!" with " No, I won't!"

Reflections on the day:

While picking up an item at a convieniece store this evening, I had a brief conversation with the checker. She was wearing a message T-shirt that said something like "I'm stressed out and trying not to choke someone." I commented on the shirt. She mentioned that she regularly works 3 jobs just to make ends meet. I was at a loss for words.

What could I say? What could I do to help?

I admire folks who are giving it their all, busting their humps to take care of kids, pay bills and having little to show for it in the end. While I comment on the continuous rise in gas prices and feel the pinch, the pince doesn't keep me from eating or paying the bills.....yet.

I know that others aren't so fortunate.

I can pray. I know I should pray.

Living the Faith

Son of Slain San Antonio Restaurant Owner offers to pay for Defense of Accused Killer

On my drive home today, I listened to a a very moving radio interview on WOAI-AM. On the Joe Pags show, I heard Louis Barrios, the son of Viola Barrios explain why he said he would pay for the defense of the accused killer of his own mother. It really was a powerful testimony of the aggressive Love of God and living as Jesus would live.

I was not easy for me to listen to as it made me take a hard look at my current faith, forgiveness, and how I have responded to hurts and transgressions against me.

The Path Called Christmas
and Holy Glimpses along the Way

Christmas has arrived. In looking back on the last few weeks of Advent, a time meant for preparing our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus, once again I feel I have fallen short in my preparations. I have not spent the time I need alone in prayer and reading scripture. Yet, I have had experiences during the days leading up to Christmas where God was breaking through the busyness of it all, pointing the way.

Immanuel: God with us.

Holy Strangers: I received help when I needed it from a cowboy type in a truck. After lending a help with a load that fell off the bed of my truck, my thank you was met with "Merry Christmas." A friend from work makes the comment in a Christmas Greeting, "Look around, everyone needs help sometimes."

The Reality of Santa: A letter to Santa from a child in a family in poverty is intercepted by people who work together and pool resources to buy food and gifts to be delivered anonymously on Christmas.

Retail Wasteland: Stuck a in Wal-Mart checkout line and getting the feeling that there has to be more that all this prepackaged stuff that is bought today and forgotten tomorrow. The insanity of it all.

A Sermon that Hits Home:

Pastor Rick states in a sermon that at Christmas there is a place that he would rather be. At a time a place in the past where Mom, Dad, and grandparents and family were together at Christmas. With those beloved departed, it is impossible. That is why we need that baby Jesus to be the center of Christmas and our lives.

Seeing old friends again:
Traveling back to our old Church for Christmas Eve service. Lots of hugs. Children Growing up. Love radiating, candles and a Silent Night brings tears to the front of ones eyes.

Being in the World and Not of It

Romans 12:2 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.-(NIV)

The following quote rings true to me and what I see and believe to be happening within much of the modern Christian Church. I even see evidence of this in some of the current debates and issues within the Presbyterian Church of which I am a member. This is something that I have suspected for a long time, but Oz Guinness has put it into words.

"For all the lofty recent statements on biblical authority, a great part of the evangelical community has made an historic shift. It has transferred authority from Sola Scriptura (by scripture alone) to Sola Cultura (by culture alone)."

Banking on Hope

Reflections on Jeremiah 32

"Hope sings over the tragedies of our days."

You've gotta hand it to Jeremiah. While the enemy is camped outside and invasion is close at hand, Jeremiah buys a piece of property investing in the future. What future? Not the present reality of the eve on invasion. No, only God's word promising a brighter tomorrow.

Jeremiah's was acting on on a different reality than the one at hand. Audacity? Yes!
Yet that is what Jeremiah was called to do. That is what we are called to do too.

I have been reflecting of a tragic car accident that happened about a week ago. Two young adults were driving home. Suddenly, upon seeing an officer on the side of the road, another driver makes a run for it and slammed into the two head on while going at a high rate of speed.
They didn't have a chance. All that is left is a photo of the two standing together in a happy moment, and memories.

I didn't know the two, but this type of loss is so senseless it is numbing. Yet how long do any of us have? Five minutes as Steven Curtis Chapman sings about? Or is this "My Last Night in America" as Paul Colman sings about?

Yet, rest assured, Hope is there singing over the tragedies of our days. God is faithful and just to complete the good work he began with each of us.

Great is Thy faithfulness, Oh God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee,
Thou changeth not, thy compassions they fade not,
As Thou has been Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness, Great is Thy Faithfulness

Seen on a T-Shirt...

"Party Now, Rehab Later."

I was taken aback a bit when I saw this message on a teen girl's shirt while I was at McDonald's. I will add that this youth appeared to be dining with her mother. I can't say that it surprises me especially when the celebrity tabloids are filled with the escapades of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and the celebs that are constantly checking in and out of rehab facilities.

Update: After thinking about this for awhile, I thought of another faulty theological t-shirt message that is related to the message on the shirt mentioned above.

"Sin Now, Repent Later."

The obvious problem with this type of thinking is that one never knows if there will be a later or if there is a later, how much of one.

Romans 6:1 comes to mind:

"Shall we continue to sin though Grace may abound? By no means!" <

Drawn to God?

Yesterday I was thinking about my own faith journey and conversion experience. This led me to a question I have asked many times: Why do some people believe and some just don't?

I know some that probably think believing in God is one of the most foolish things in the world. Yet, while I struggle with doubts and sin as most if not all Christians do, belief in God for me is the default position I keep turning to again and again.

Is one's conversion decision made independently from God or is a person drawn to God like iron filings to a magnetic pole?

In church this morning, I couldn't help but notice a little preschool aged girl this morning at the front of the church during the children's time.

Sitting by the pastor, Sarah ( Not here real name) sat quietly, listening and taking it all in.
The pastor was talking about treasure in Heaven. Sarah repeated the word, "Treasure."

A little later, bright eyed Sarah, repeated almost in a reflective way, "Kingdom of Heaven".

Later, I was serving as an usher. As the collection plates were passed, I noticed a solitary coin in one of the plates.

I was thankful to not miss these moments as I feel God was doing an object lesson on innocence, that I just happen to glimpse.

Innocence and trust: Lord, help me to run to you like a small child would run to the arms of a loving parent!

I pray for so many in our world that have lost the Holy Sense of Wonder, and have traded them in, either through disappointment or hurt, for calloused hearts and blind eyes.

I like this blog posting because it raw, real, and offers sobering glimpse of Church and church members.
